⁣Agroecology and Farmer Field Schools – a solution for Zero Hunger and Ecosystems Restoration

Sustainable food and agriculture are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. One of the ways of achieving Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment, and Better Life, leaving no one behind, is through agroecology. Agroecology helps ensure food and nutritional security, reduce poverty, mitigate climate change and restore ecosystems by promoting farming practices that increase crop resilience and biodiversity, sequestering carbon in soils and improving local livelihoods. FAO and its partners support global efforts to provide inclusive training though Farmer Field Schools and promote responsible governance for policy development on agroecology. Agroecology has the potential to accelerate the transition to sustainable food systems and contribute to ecosystems restoration.

Agroecology and Farmer Field Schools – a solution for Zero Hunger and Ecosystems Restoration
Copyright ⓒFood and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣Sumbawa District and the other three-district and one-municipality governments in Sumbawa Island have faced serious ecological challenges due to the increasing deforestation and forest conversion. As a small island, accumulated impacts due to these conditions, escalated by climate change, have been more serious compared to large island. Including the threats to the Bajo People, who have been living for generations in Bungin Island (Coral Villages). Produced by CIFOR and Rekam Jejak Nusantara Foundation, the video captures the activities implemented by KANOPPI and the associated impacts. Through participatory action research, KANOPPI influences the policy processes and translates landscape-based strategies into practices through a complementary agroforestry approach. Particularly in fostering a strong community-based inclusive business model, as a driver of the regional economy. Moving forward, KANOPPI initiative in developing the Grand Strategy for an Integrated Timber and Non-Timber Management at the Landscape Level, needs to be adopted at the island level of Sumbawa, to ensure synergy among the four-district and one-municipality governments.

Multistakeholder initiatives: fostering landscape-based natural resources management in Sumbawa
Copyright ⓒCenter for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣Promoting Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in the context of Viet Nam Central Coastal Region The 2022 CIFOR-ICRAF Science Week Annual Meeting (SW2022 in short) took place during the week of 6-10 June 2022 as a hybrid meeting, connecting 500+ scientists across the world. The event was jointly run with staff gathered in hubs in Nairobi, Kenya and Bogor, Indonesia supplemented as well as connecting remotely across the 30 or so countries where CIFOR-ICRAF has offices and worldwide to our scientific staff connecting via Zoom. In this presentation, lead scientist Nguyen Thi Toan discusses Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) in the context of Viet Nam. Starting from the historical background, she illustrates a number of key selected EbA interventions in specific areas, their implementation and the positive results they yielded, both in terms of market value and capacity building. https://www.cifor-icraf.org/ https://www.cifor.org/ https://worldagroforestry.org/ https://www.foreststreesagroforestry.... https://www.globallandscapesforum.org/ https://resilient-landscapes.org/

Science Week - Nguyen Thi Toan - Promoting Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA)...
Copyright ⓒCenter for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣The Agroecology TPP together with Alliance Bioversity International - CIAT,
CIFOR-ICRAF, and the Gund Institute - University of Vermont, held a webinar on
'Driving the Agroecological Transition', which marked the launch of the
four-year CGIAR's Agroecological Transitions research programme. The webinar
set out to explore the existing tools and solutions that can help ensure the
agroecological transition around the world. In particular, it introduced the
audience to the TRANSITIONS program and exlained: • How the development and use of metrics for agroecology can help guide policy and investment, all the while
promoting a robust vision, measurement, and accountability; • The importance of
digital tools for rapid and large-scale technical assistance and performance
assessment at low costs; • The role of the private and public sector in
accelerating investment and incentives for agroecology You can learn more about
the TRANSITIONS program at https://tinyurl.com/bddsanwk

To join the Agroecology TPP’s Community of Practice: 1.
