Mitigation solutions show promise in reducing dolphin depredation in the Mediterranean

Across the Mediterranean, one of the problems that fishers have encountered in the last few decades involves dolphins removing parts of the catch directly from the net. Called depredation, this phenomenon is a growing concern for fishers, conservationists, scientists and administrators alike. The GFCM and ACCOBAMS, in collaboration with SPA/RAC and LIFE have run a four-year project in five countries to better understand depredation and to identify potential measures to mitigate these interactions in order to support sustainable fisheries and protect dolphin populations.

⁣Restoration of peatlands entails deliberate actions that initiate or accelerate the recovery of a degraded peatland to its former better state. Peatland restoration involves measures designed to change ecosystems that have been impoverished, damaged or degraded due to human activity, and revert them to a state similar to, or as near to their natural state as possible through the re-establishment of some of their ecological processes and functions. Peatland restoration in Indonesia is mainly
coordinated by a dedicated governmental agency: the Peatland and Mangrove
Restoration Agency or Badan Restorasi Gambut dan Mangrove (BRGM), known as BRG until 2021. A series of steps and actions that guide peatland restoration is
underpinned by strategies that target future sustainable land use and
management, social justice, livelihoods, governance and conflict resolution.
Restoration activities include rewetting drained peatlands (by back-filling and
blocking canals), revegetation of landscapes and revitalizing communities (by
supporting sustainable livelihood development) and avoiding land clearing by
fire. By 2020, BRG had coordinated peatland restoration activities in seven
provinces: Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan,
South Kalimantan and Papua. Long-term successful and effective peatland
restoration needs monitoring efforts that can inform design, strategy, site
selection and management approaches, as well as improve restoration efforts
through required adjustments. Availability of tested protocols or standard
tools to help assess the outcomes of restored ecosystems can help practitioners
determine peatland restoration successes and failures. Specifically, having
simple, easy to recognize and measurable monitoring indicators is helpful for
peatland restoration stakeholders. In this context, CIFOR – with support from
BRGM, Riau University’s Disaster Risk Study Centre or Pusat Studi Bencana (PSB)
and PT Rimba Makmur Utama (PT RMU) as well as consultations from several
national and international peatland experts – has developed a scientifically
robust, reliable and practical set of criteria and indicators (C&I) to help
assess the progress and outcomes of peatland restoration efforts. Issues that
are important for peatland restoration can be divided into four major
categories: biophysical, economic, social and governance. The C&I approach
aims to recognize and incorporate attributes from all four aspects to allow
nuanced understanding of all facets of a peatland, particularly assessing the
local context.

The Trade, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub)

⁣The Trade, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub): research on sustainable trade of palm oil, coffee and wildlife in Indonesia Balancing the benefits and negative impacts is an intractable challenge in the implementation of
sustainable trade. To overcome this challenge, The Trade, Development, and the
Environment Hub (TRADE Hub) is a global research consortium led by The UN
Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC). Various
agriculture and wildlife commodities trade are in focus of research in eight
countries and involving around 50 partner organizations. The main goal of the
TRADE Hub in Indonesia is to make the global trade of palm oil and coffee
deliver benefits for the country while reducing impacts to high-risk forested
landscapes and their surrounding communities. The research project is also
expected to enhance information related to the legal and illegal trade of
wildlife in Indonesia, and contribute to address illegal trade and make legal
trade more sustainable. Towards the main goal, CIFOR-ICRAF research team is
conducting various research to understand at-risk landscapes and associated
supply chain risks to guide sustainable production using range of expertise on
sustainable value chains of the focus commodity.

Mangroves: a life source for coastal communities

⁣The contribution of mangroves in providing food security, nutrition, and
livelihoods for local communities is not yet widely known. Mangrove ecosystems
are essential nurseries and habitats for fish and other aquatic animals, rich
in macro and micronutrients for food security and nutrition. Mangrove ecosystem
also provide a more calm fishing ground than open waters, allowing fishers with
small or no boats to generate livelihoods. Under the ReCLAIM Project funded by
Lucille-Packard Foundation and The United States Agency for International
Development (USAID), CIFOR and partners conducted multidisciplinary research to
assess the contribution of mangroves to food security, nutrition, and
livelihoods of local communities in Banyuwangi and Demak on the island of Java
in Indonesia. This video visually summarizes how the research was conducted,

Mangroves restoration for all

⁣'Blue carbon' refers to the world’s carbon stores that are stashed in the plants and soil of coastal and marine ecosystems-including mangroves. As we straddle the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), the demand to save and grow mangroves through restoration and protection is gaining increasing attention. Not only to achieve global target, but mangroves also gain their popularity to answer the
national agenda in Indonesia. Indonesia has set a target to restore 600,000
hectares of mangroves by 2024 as part of its wider goal to achieve a Forest and
Other Land Use Net Sink by 2030. To make it happen, CIFOR-ICRAF conducted a
project called Restoring Coastal Landscape for Adaptation Integrated Mitigation
(ReCLAIM). ReCLAIM is a collaborative effort between CIFOR and various
Indonesian partners representing universities, government agencies and civil
society with support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. This project
aims to find out what’s needed at local, provincial, and national levels to
enhance recognition of blue carbon ecosystems through evidence-based mangrove
restoration for improved livelihoods, food security and nutrition benefits to
the coastal communities.

⁣En RDC, le ‘makala’ comme il est connu localement est le combustible largement utilisé pour la cuisson à Kisangani. Cela indique aussi que la production de makala de manière non durable est un des facteurs principaux de la déforestation dans la
province de la Tshopo. A travers le projet GML financé par l'Union Européenne,
le CIFOR-ICRAF promeut l’utilisation des foyers améliorés dans les communautés
dans l’objectif de contribuer à la diminution de la pression sur les forêts
fortement menacées par la coupe du bois de chauffe mais aussi à l’amélioration
des conditions de vie par la réduction des dépenses en combustibles dans les ménages. Dans cette lancée, dans une vision de promotion de l’entrepreneuriat local,
quatre microentreprises locales de fabrication des foyers améliorés ont été
retenu en fonction de leur performance pour répondre à la demande du marché. Il
s’agit l’Organisation de Bâtisses et de gestion environnementale (Orbagen),
Jiko Butembo, Boyoma et de l’association des fabricants des braseros à
céramiques de Kisangani (AFBC-Kis).

PERIGI South Sumatra: scaling up locally appropriate restoration models on degraded peatland

⁣In the Perigi OKI area of South Sumatra, the degradation of peatlands is ongoing due to changes in environmental conditions, patterns of human settlement, modes of
production, and demands of society. Very recently, with the Republic of Korea’s
Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding support, a partnership of the
National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS), Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI) and
CIFOR-ICRAF is investigating the potential to restore peatlands and introduce
sustainable management using agrosilvofishery approaches, which have the
potential to restore the ecological functions of the peatlands while providing
multiple EGS required to sustain local communities.

⁣The Central Africa Forest Observatory (OFAC) became a specialized unit of the Executive Secretariat of the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), a regional organization comprising ten Member States, which aims to promote regional coordination and cooperation on forest governance, conservation, and
sustainable use of natural resources. The move to institutionalize OFAC within
COMIFAC has facilitated more exchanges between Member States, strengthened
national coordinators’ capacities to gather data, and made OFAC’s data crucial
for monitoring and evaluation systems.

⁣Agroforestry for me is one ecosystem to produce sustainable products today, tomorrow and also in the future.' 15 years ago Alexander Retana took over his father’s farm in Costa Rica. The farm consisted of open rice fields, with minimal
biodiversity. He started planting trees to give himself shade in the baking
summer months but soon found that he was creating a new ecosystem above his
head. Integrating the jungle with his farm didn’t just increase biodiversity,

Forest data and transparency: [ Zoom Meeting ] on Costa Rica’s experience

Costa Rica has made many efforts to monitor and conserve its forests. Since 2015, the Government has been developing a national system for monitoring land cover,
land use and ecosystems (SIMOCUTE: Sistema Nacional de Monitoreo de la
Cobertura y Uso de la Tierra y Ecosistemas) that facilitates the collection,
integration, management, and dissemination of national-scale environmental data
and information. FAO has “zoomed” in on Costa Rica’s national system for
monitoring land cover, land use and ecosystems SIMOCUTE, which has been
highlighted in a recent FAO case study publication. The webinar featured
presentations on the case study and SIMOCUTE, followed by a discussion and will
conclude with the key messages of this work. The webinar and the case study
were conducted in the framework of the project “Building global capacity to
increase transparency in the forest sector (CBIT-Forest)” funded by the
Capacity-Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) trust fund of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

Creating opportunities for forestry investment in Uganda

The video highlights the importance of partnerships with the private sector, to
promote sustainable commercial forestry in Uganda. It documents two successful
workshops involving the finance sector and small and medium scale tree growers
in Uganda, held in December 2019. The workshops aimed at creating awareness
among the financial community about the existing forest plantation resource,
fostering partnership between tree growers and financial institutions, as well
as empowering tree growers with skills to develop bankable projects to attract
finance. This work is a result of an excellent collaboration between FAO’s
Partnerships Division, FAO Forestry Department and FAO Uganda. In Uganda, FAO
is facilitating discussions between tree farmers and financial sector players,
to promote sustainable investment in the forestry value chain.
