⁣
Do you know where your fish is from? With billions relying on seafood as a key source of protein, recent decades have seen demands skyrocket. And if you've ever had fish, chances are you've had seafood caught from aquaculture. Fish Farming is already responsible for around half of global seafood consumption. But what exactly is aquaculture and what does it look like? We've travelled to the Canary Islands to deep dive beneath its surface.

Fish Farming | Aquaculture in the Canary Islands
Copyright ⓒ FoodUnfolded
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣

We talk to Abrie from Kalahari Klein. Abrie is a 22 year old farmer, he farms in the omahake region, a stone's throw away from the town of gobabis. We invited him to talk to us about his journey and how to start a farm. This farm had served as a residential farm for his grand parents. Abrie has been farming for over a year and during this short time, he has found more ways to commercialize this former residential farm...here is how it all started. If you are just starting your farm or planning on doing so, buying stock or getting your animals ready for the market does not just happen over night. These animals have to be fed an industry grade diet to ensure that they are market ready and each level of growth comes with its special diet, this applies to all live stock, small or large. Abrie became full-time just over a year ago, we were curious to hear how his journey has been leading a team of men and women far much older than him and how his more scientific approach pairs up with the more traditional form of farming that his team members on the farm grew up with. Farming remains to be one of the biggest job creators world wide and with increasing numbers in population, farms are under pressure more than ever to produce at a larger scale and governments are calling out to investors to jump on the wagon to help make farms more sustainable and reduce imports on products that can be locally grown. We can not emphasize enough on the need for collaboration among farmers and also in skills and knowledge trade. The transfer of sustainable farming knowledge will have future farmers pick and improve on the skills taught to them by farmers like Abrie and in so doing, would have taken a step closer to a self sustaining farming ecosystem.

Farming The Future Namibia Pilot episode
Copyright ⓒ FARMING THE FUTURE NA
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound
Music: SONG1 Chocolate Cookie Jam, ARTIST An Jone, ALBUM Chocolate Cookie Jam
LICENSES YouTube Premium

⁣Gerben is a young arable farmer from the province of Noord-Brabant in The Netherlands, and Sarah is the Senior Advisor Food & Agriculture at WWF NL (World Wide Fund for Nature). They sit down to have a conversation around the role of farmers and environmental organisations towards sustainable food production. They share their thoughts from the tension surrounding the nitrogen crisis and policy in the Netherlands, the failure of government, unrealistic demands, and what is needed to help farmers move forward towards sustainable production methods. Conversations With Young Farmers is a FoodUnfolded Miniseries that features conversations between young Dutch farmers and different voices on the subject of sustainable agriculture. Why is it so important to have these conversations? Because understanding one another is the first step towards solutions for a better food system that supports everyone.
⁣

Children in primary school today will play a significant role in bringing about the changes needed to ensure a sustainable future for forests. “Forests for a sustainable future: educating children” is a project launched by FAO in 2019 to educate children aged 9 to 12 in the United Republic of Tanzania and the Philippines about the importance of managing forests sustainably. Through interactive hands-on forest-based learning modules developed in collaboration with national partners, the project aims to build the skills of the adults of tomorrow to make decisions in favour of the sustainable use and management of forests, and to increase children’s interest in forestry as a possible career. This video shows testing of lessons and activities in Tanzanian schools, and includes group work, game-based learning and role play. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL). #SDGs #Agenda2030 #GlobalGoals #UNFAO #FutureForesters

Forests for a sustainable future: educating children — testing lessons in Tanzania
Copyright ⓒ Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣A sustainable food system is the foundation of sustainable society and therefore must be realized. Agriculture and food systems in the 21st century will exist and operate in an economic, social, environment, and resource context very different from that in which our contemporary industrial food system came to dominate. Industrialization is not the only way to feed the world. Two competing agriculture-food system paradigms, "Life-Science Intensive" and "Ecologically Intensive", claim the sustainability high ground and are battling it out. To inform critical and constructive thinking regarding an appropriate food system future, this presentation will assess outcomes of 20th century food system industrialization and factors and forces that are now and continually shaping our food system. A vision for advancing sustainable 21st century agri-food systems to address and adapt to environmental, social, and economic challenges will be presented.

⁣

Building Sustainable Food Systems for the 21st Century - Kent Mullinix
Copyright ⓒKwantlen Polytechnic University
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

Nature has been my garden,
my pantry and my pharmacy. I lived in the city of Orlando, Florida in a 100
square foot tiny house. With no land of my own I turned front yards into
gardens and shared the bounty of food with the homeowners. Over the year I grew
over 100 different foods in my gardens, foraged over 200 foods from nature and
I even grew and foraged my own medicine and vitamins too. This project wasn’t
just about growing and foraging all of my food though. It was about empowering
others to take back power from Big Ag. I built gardens 15 Gardens for the
People, planted over 200 Community Fruit Trees, sent out over 5,000 seed packs
to help people grow their own organic, healthy food and I taught free gardening
classes to the people in my community. I’ve been exploring food for nearly a
decade and I believe the globalized, industrialized food system is broken .
This was a personal quest to see whether I could step away from Big Ag and grow
and forage every bite of my own food. Here I am, one year later. I did it and I
feel healthier and happier today than when I started. I'm here to share
solutions for a more sustainable and just food system with you.

Learn more about the project: http://robgreenfield.org/foodfreedom/ The guidelines behind this project: http://robgreenfield.org/foodfreedomr... The purpose of this
project: http://robgreenfield.org/foodfreedomwhy/ List of all 300 foods
that I ate: http://robgreenfield.org/foodfreedomf... Log of what I ate each
day: http://robgreenfield.org/foodfreedomm... Photos of my meals and
foods: http://robgreenfield.org/foodfreedomp...

Rob Greenfield is an activist and humanitarian dedicated to leading the way to a
more sustainable and just world.
