⁣Autoluw is a Dutch urban planning concept meaning "nearly car-free". It's put into use all over the country, and has resulted in some of the greatest urban environments
I've ever been to. This video explores the concept of autoluw, and how it is
applied to Dutch streets, along with some examples from some foreign cities as
well, such as Toronto and Copenhagen. I also talk about what Amsterdam has done
to move towards the autoluwe stad, and briefly mention Agenda Amsterdam Autoluw. There is so much to talk about on this subject! I definitely plan a follow-up
video on different aspects of where autoluw principles are applied.
⁣Pedestrianized streets in Montreal are very popular! I have been visiting Montreal peroidically over the last 25 years but not often of late and to see the progression of safe, comfortable walking areas has been nice. But particularly now: since Covid the city started amping up the numbers and distance of either mostly pedestrianized or open streets throughout all seven boroughs of the city. I got to visit three of the coolest ones plus ample places all over Montreal that are great places for people. In Montreal they boast one amazing business street (Mont Royal) that runs for over 1 1/2 miles and even a good portion of the cross streets are closed to cars. The
space is filled morning, day and evening, is closed 24 hours a day for the
entire Summer and is filled with every kind of imaginable user. The city even
has a pedicab/cargo bike service that is free for anyone that needs it.

Montreal’s Popular Pedestrian Open
Copyright Streetfilms
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo copyright Alessio Patron, Licensed by Unsplash

⁣Fun fact: in Dutch, the plural of "woonerf" is "woonerven", just like how the plural of
bike "fiets" is "fietsen".
⁣Darryl Condon sits down with Stuart McNish for a conversation about how the design of cities has to change. Fewer cars, better transit, greater density, and more liveable spaces that make city living fun and affordable. This interview was an episode of Conversations That Matter. Darryl is HCMA Architecture + Design's Managing Principal. Read Darryl's perspective on his role as an architect at HCMA:
hcma.ca/perspective/darryl-condon/ About HCMA: HCMA designs buildings, brands,
and experiences that maximize positive impact. We believe that human
connections are critical to solving the fundamental problems of our time, so we
create solutions that ignite conversation and build compassionate communities.
By shifting our perspective to learn from others, advocating for inclusive,
accessible design, and striving to understand the deeper social context, we
hope to contribute to a future where people and institutions come together to
make a positive change.

How To Design A City Of The Future | Darryl Condon | Conversations That Matter
Copyright HCMA
License: Creative Commons Attribution

license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo CCAL (RA) same video screenshot,

Copyright HCMA
