This video presents the new version of the Global Agro-Ecological Zones platform (GAEZ v4) developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). This platform which provides the agronomic backbone for various applications including the quantification of land productivity as well as several key information for agricultural and rural investment. We talk to Abrie from Kalahari Klein. Abrie is a 22 year old farmer, he farms in the omahake region, a stone's throw away from the town of gobabis. We invited him to talk to us about his journey and how to start a farm. This farm had served as a residential farm for his grand parents. Abrie has been farming for over a year and during this short time, he has found more ways to commercialize this former residential farm...here is how it all started. If you are just starting your farm or planning on doing so, buying stock or getting your animals ready for the market does not just happen over night. These animals have to be fed an industry grade diet to ensure that they are market ready and each level of growth comes with its special diet, this applies to all live stock, small or large. Abrie became full-time just over a year ago, we were curious to hear how his journey has been leading a team of men and women far much older than him and how his more scientific approach pairs up with the more traditional form of farming that his team members on the farm grew up with. Farming remains to be one of the biggest job creators world wide and with increasing numbers in population, farms are under pressure more than ever to produce at a larger scale and governments are calling out to investors to jump on the wagon to help make farms more sustainable and reduce imports on products that can be locally grown. We can not emphasize enough on the need for collaboration among farmers and also in skills and knowledge trade. The transfer of sustainable farming knowledge will have future farmers pick and improve on the skills taught to them by farmers like Abrie and in so doing, would have taken a step closer to a self sustaining farming ecosystem.

Children in primary school today will play a significant role in bringing about the changes needed to ensure a sustainable future for forests. “Forests for a sustainable future: educating children” is a project launched by FAO in 2019 to educate children aged 9 to 12 in the United Republic of Tanzania and the Philippines about the importance of managing forests sustainably. Through interactive hands-on forest-based learning modules developed in collaboration with national partners, the project aims to build the skills of the adults of tomorrow to make decisions in favour of the sustainable use and management of forests, and to increase children’s interest in forestry as a possible career. This video shows testing of lessons and activities in Tanzanian schools, and includes group work, game-based learning and role play. European Union-FAO support to agricultural land consolidation in North Macedonia (Long)

⁣Funded by the European Union and co-funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the MAINLAND project is implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy and other partners in North Macedonia, supporting farmers and rural communities to overcome the excessive fragmentation of agricultural land, and to improve farm productivity and community life in the process. The main goal of the video is to present the results of the EU-FAO support to agricultural land consolidation in North Macedonia under the MAINLAND project and it’s impact on the ground through the voice of the main project beneficiaries and evidence from the field.

This video provides an overview of the work undertaken by the Food and Agriculture Organization’s 7th Expert Panel for the assessment of proposals to amend CITES appendices which met in Rome, Italy.

Productive and sustainable fishery systems are key policy areas of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Fisheries and Aquaculture Division which convenes a panel of fishery, trade and species experts to assess CITES listing proposals from a scientific perspective. This assessment is undertaken in accordance with the CITES biological listing criteria, and to also comment, as appropriate, on technical aspects of the proposal in relation to biology, ecology, trade and management issues. The panel also assesses the of the CITES listing proposals in relation to their effectiveness in the conservation of the species concerned.

Mitigation solutions show promise in reducing dolphin depredation in the Mediterranean

Across the Mediterranean, one of the problems that fishers have encountered in the last few decades involves dolphins removing parts of the catch directly from the net. Called depredation, this phenomenon is a growing concern for fishers, conservationists, scientists and administrators alike. The GFCM and ACCOBAMS, in collaboration with SPA/RAC and LIFE have run a four-year project in five countries to better understand depredation and to identify potential measures to mitigate these interactions in order to support sustainable fisheries and protect dolphin populations.

One of the ways of achieving Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment, and Better Life, leaving no one behind, is through agroecology. Agroecology helps ensure food and nutritional security, reduce poverty, mitigate climate change and restore ecosystems by promoting farming practices that increase crop resilience and biodiversity, sequestering carbon in soils and improving local livelihoods. FAO and its partners support global efforts to provide inclusive training though Farmer Field Schools and promote responsible governance for policy development on agroecology. Agroecology has the potential to accelerate the transition to sustainable food systems and contribute to ecosystems restoration.

This movie falls under the project “Promotion of Good Agricultural Practices, including Integrated Pest Management to reduce agrochemical pollution in upper Litani basin”. This project by the Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with FAO and funded by the World Bank under the overall “Lake Qaraoun Pollution Prevention Project” implemented by the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR). The project aims at reducing the Litani River and Lake Qaraoun water pollution resulting from the excessive use of agrochemicals (fertilizers and pesticides), through the promotion and implementation of good agricultural and integrated crop management practices among potato farmers in the Upper Litani basin in the cazas of West Bekaa and Zahle.
