⁣
Do you know where your fish is from? With billions relying on seafood as a key source of protein, recent decades have seen demands skyrocket. And if you've ever had fish, chances are you've had seafood caught from aquaculture. Fish Farming is already responsible for around half of global seafood consumption. But what exactly is aquaculture and what does it look like? We've travelled to the Canary Islands to deep dive beneath its surface.

Fish Farming | Aquaculture in the Canary Islands
Copyright ⓒ FoodUnfolded
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣

We talk to Abrie from Kalahari Klein. Abrie is a 22 year old farmer, he farms in the omahake region, a stone's throw away from the town of gobabis. We invited him to talk to us about his journey and how to start a farm. This farm had served as a residential farm for his grand parents. Abrie has been farming for over a year and during this short time, he has found more ways to commercialize this former residential farm...here is how it all started. If you are just starting your farm or planning on doing so, buying stock or getting your animals ready for the market does not just happen over night. These animals have to be fed an industry grade diet to ensure that they are market ready and each level of growth comes with its special diet, this applies to all live stock, small or large. Abrie became full-time just over a year ago, we were curious to hear how his journey has been leading a team of men and women far much older than him and how his more scientific approach pairs up with the more traditional form of farming that his team members on the farm grew up with. Farming remains to be one of the biggest job creators world wide and with increasing numbers in population, farms are under pressure more than ever to produce at a larger scale and governments are calling out to investors to jump on the wagon to help make farms more sustainable and reduce imports on products that can be locally grown. We can not emphasize enough on the need for collaboration among farmers and also in skills and knowledge trade. The transfer of sustainable farming knowledge will have future farmers pick and improve on the skills taught to them by farmers like Abrie and in so doing, would have taken a step closer to a self sustaining farming ecosystem.

Farming The Future Namibia Pilot episode
Copyright ⓒ FARMING THE FUTURE NA
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound
Music: SONG1 Chocolate Cookie Jam, ARTIST An Jone, ALBUM Chocolate Cookie Jam
LICENSES YouTube Premium

⁣Gerben is a young arable farmer from the province of Noord-Brabant in The Netherlands, and Sarah is the Senior Advisor Food & Agriculture at WWF NL (World Wide Fund for Nature). They sit down to have a conversation around the role of farmers and environmental organisations towards sustainable food production. They share their thoughts from the tension surrounding the nitrogen crisis and policy in the Netherlands, the failure of government, unrealistic demands, and what is needed to help farmers move forward towards sustainable production methods. Conversations With Young Farmers is a FoodUnfolded Miniseries that features conversations between young Dutch farmers and different voices on the subject of sustainable agriculture. Why is it so important to have these conversations? Because understanding one another is the first step towards solutions for a better food system that supports everyone.
⁣

Children in primary school today will play a significant role in bringing about the changes needed to ensure a sustainable future for forests. “Forests for a sustainable future: educating children” is a project launched by FAO in 2019 to educate children aged 9 to 12 in the United Republic of Tanzania and the Philippines about the importance of managing forests sustainably. Through interactive hands-on forest-based learning modules developed in collaboration with national partners, the project aims to build the skills of the adults of tomorrow to make decisions in favour of the sustainable use and management of forests, and to increase children’s interest in forestry as a possible career. This video shows testing of lessons and activities in Tanzanian schools, and includes group work, game-based learning and role play. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL). #SDGs #Agenda2030 #GlobalGoals #UNFAO #FutureForesters

Forests for a sustainable future: educating children — testing lessons in Tanzania
Copyright ⓒ Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣

Mitigation solutions show promise in reducing dolphin depredation in the Mediterranean

Across the Mediterranean, one of the problems that fishers have encountered in the last few decades involves dolphins removing parts of the catch directly from the net. Called depredation, this phenomenon is a growing concern for fishers, conservationists, scientists and administrators alike. The GFCM and ACCOBAMS, in collaboration with SPA/RAC and LIFE have run a four-year project in five countries to better understand depredation and to identify potential measures to mitigate these interactions in order to support sustainable fisheries and protect dolphin populations.

Mitigation solutions show promise in reducing dolphin depredation in the Mediterranean
Copyright ⓒFood and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣Agroecology and Farmer Field Schools – a solution for Zero Hunger and Ecosystems Restoration

Sustainable food and agriculture are at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. One of the ways of achieving Better Production, Better Nutrition, Better Environment, and Better Life, leaving no one behind, is through agroecology. Agroecology helps ensure food and nutritional security, reduce poverty, mitigate climate change and restore ecosystems by promoting farming practices that increase crop resilience and biodiversity, sequestering carbon in soils and improving local livelihoods. FAO and its partners support global efforts to provide inclusive training though Farmer Field Schools and promote responsible governance for policy development on agroecology. Agroecology has the potential to accelerate the transition to sustainable food systems and contribute to ecosystems restoration.

Agroecology and Farmer Field Schools – a solution for Zero Hunger and Ecosystems Restoration
Copyright ⓒFood and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣Future of farming: AI-enabled Robot flexes new dexterity skills Where will your next meal come from? You probably know, but millions of people do not. The food supply chain is facing a crisis. Population growth, labor shortages and centuries of over-farming and environmental abuse threaten one of our most basic needs. The issue of agriculture sustainability is a people problem. But it might be the robots that save humanity. 1. FarmWise (AI based Farming Robots Built for Farmers) FarmWise builds smart and autonomous robots to solve the problem of weeds in agriculture, saving farmers time and money, and providing their consumers with healthier products. Work with the best engineers in their field, from Computer Vision to Robotics and mechanical engineering. Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-life products by testing your work on the field, literally. Have a real impact by solving the burning issues that farming is facing while building the new paradigm for the future of food production. - Vision Technology : A suite of sensors allows our robots to perceive a wide range of information about each plant. We use that information together with state-of-the-art learning algorithms to know what’s best for this particular plant at this particular time. - Robotic Hardware : Data alone won’t be sufficient to solve farmers’ desperate need for better processes. ➡ http://farmwise.io/ • Headquarters : San Francisco, California • Contact : contact@farmwise.io ● 2. Root AI Root AI is a research company aiming to create intelligent robots that will help growers build the farms of the future. Root AI is proud to introduce the Virgo harvesting robot. To learn more about how autonomous harvesting is transforming the agricultural industry, ➡ https://root-ai.com 👉• https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/11/root-... 👉• https://medium.com/inside-pjc/robotic... ● 3. TerraSentia Cross a John Deere with a Roomba, and You Get This Crop-Monitoring Robot. Farms are a hotbed for automation. Robots, drones, and artificial intelligence have been assisting in agriculture for years and 2017 showed they could farm an acre and a half of barley, from planting to tending and harvesting, without a human stepping foot on the field. TerraSentia travels under the canopy autonomously using only LiDAR based navigation. TerraSentia platform: unique under-canopy data collection, autonomous navigation, and machine-vision based analytics. ➡ https://www.earthsense.co ● 4. Vegebot - Cambridge Univ. Machine Learning Helps Robot Harvest Lettuce for the First Time. The robot is not near a commercial stage but instead has been developed to pioneer new computer vision and engineering processes for future agricultural outcomes. Crops such as potatoes and wheat have been harvested mechanically at scale for decades, but many other crops have to date resisted automation. Iceberg lettuce is one such crop. Although it is the most common type of lettuce grown in the UK, iceberg is easily damaged and grows relatively flat to the ground, presenting a challenge for robotic harvesters. The ‘Vegebot’, developed by a team at the University of Cambridge, was initially trained to recognise and harvest iceberg lettuce in a lab setting. It has now been successfully tested in a variety of field conditions in cooperation with G’s Growers, a local fruit and vegetable co-operative. ➡ https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/r... 👉• PDF : https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/e... ● 5. Blue River Technology Computer vision, machine learning and robotics for agriculture. Blue River Technology, a pioneer in the use of computer vision and robotics for agriculture. Founded in 2011 by two Stanford University Alumni, Blue River Technology is developing an alternative to chemical intensive agriculture, which is both expensive and hazardous to the environment. With breakthrough computer vision techniques for identifying weeds and selectively killing unwanted plants, Blue River Technology’s equipment is significantly more efficient than traditional methods of weed elimination. Its automated solution is particularly well-suited. ➡ http://bluerivert.com #farming #robot #ai

5 AI-Enabled Farming Robots | Future of Farming
Copyright ⓒ TopTechTopic
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound
