⁣Timbulsloko Village is one of the villages in Demak Regency, Central Java. This place is experiencing eroding and flooding due to anthropogenic activities. Now, the community must adapt to live in continuously flooded lands. The community in Timbulsloko tries to save their village by restoring and putting the mangroves back. The research team from CIFOR-ICRAF and partners try to learn the challenges on the ground. Produced by CIFOR, the video captures the activities implemented by The Restoring Coastal Landscape for Adaptation Integrated Mitigation (ReCLAIM) Project such as the recognition of blue carbon ecosystems by promoting evidence-based mangrove restoration for improved livelihoods, food security, and nutrition benefits to the coastal communities. Besides Demak, ReCLAIM will be implemented in Serang Municipality and Regency, Banten; and Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. If you are interested in learning more about ReCLAIM activities.

Timbulsloko: the sinking village in Demak District
Copyright ⓒCenter for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣A sustainable food system is the foundation of sustainable society and therefore must be realized. Agriculture and food systems in the 21st century will exist and operate in an economic, social, environment, and resource context very different from that in which our contemporary industrial food system came to dominate. Industrialization is not the only way to feed the world. Two competing agriculture-food system paradigms, "Life-Science Intensive" and "Ecologically Intensive", claim the sustainability high ground and are battling it out. To inform critical and constructive thinking regarding an appropriate food system future, this presentation will assess outcomes of 20th century food system industrialization and factors and forces that are now and continually shaping our food system. A vision for advancing sustainable 21st century agri-food systems to address and adapt to environmental, social, and economic challenges will be presented.

⁣

Building Sustainable Food Systems for the 21st Century - Kent Mullinix
Copyright ⓒKwantlen Polytechnic University
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣Malnutrition is prevalent in much of the Congo Basin. Micronutrient deficiencies are especially problematic for women and young children and can lead to impaired immunity, increased mortality and morbidity, as well as impaired physical growth and cognitive development in children. Developing successful strategies to appropriately combat malnutrition requires a contextualized understanding of how the main drivers of malnutrition – diets and infection – interact to contribute to poor nutrition outcomes. Through the project Governing Multifunctional Landscapes (GML) in Sub-Saharan Africa funded by the European Union, CIFOR is working in the East Region of Cameroon and the Tshopo Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo to identify opportunities to enhance nutritional security by sustainably utilizing local forest foods rich in commonly limited micronutrients, and improving local practices related to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and breastfeeding. These experiences will contribute to designing appropriate interventions to reduce malnutrition in the region.
⁣The 50x2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap aims to support agricultural data collection, processing, and dissemination efforts of National Statistical Offices and Ministries of Agriculture. The Initiative responds to the demand for more and higher quality agricultural data, in view of fostering evidence-based decision-making of national Governments and countries’ ability to monitor the Sustainable Development Goal indicators, particularly those related to agriculture. FAO, as implementing partner of the Initiative, provides technical assistance to countries and builds statistical capacities along the whole data production process, to promote the development of sustainable national survey systems. This video shows the process and impact of the integration of the WEN module - a component aimed at measuring women’s empowerment and nutrition - during the data collection activities in Zanzibar, Tanzania – one out of three countries where WEN is being implemented.

Tanzania: Mainstreaming women's empowerment and nutrition (WEN) in the 50x2030 Initiative
Copyright ⓒFood and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Unless otherwise noted here, all music tracks licensed by Envato
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣

Transforming agrifood systems depends crucially on how people can promote and benefit from innovation in governance. Fresh ways to look at policy dialogues and decision-making processes can help societies to rapidly face interconnected challenges such as food insecurity and malnutrition, conflicts and the climate crisis. FAO promotes governance innovation to support countries in adopting the best tailored strategies to pursue a sustainable, efficient, inclusive and resilient agrifood systems transformation. - In Indonesia, FAO has helped the government rethink their national strategic planning by using an innovative analysis and modelling and supporting continuous consultation of actors at national and decentralized level. - In Uganda, FAO has helped consolidate institutional coordination among stakeholders.
⁣Galantas Gold Corporation (TSX.V: GAL, AIM: GAL) owns and recently operated a producing open pit mine. Galantas Gold Corporation is well-positioned to take advantage of the gold market. Dual-listed on the TSX Venture Exchange, located in Toronto and London’s AIM market, Galantas owns and recently operated a producing open-pit gold mine near Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Additionally, it produces by-product silver and lead with about two kilometers of underground development completed thus far. Although the company’s focus is on its mining business, they entered an arrangement with an Irish-based jewelry business. That business obtains a premium for a limited quantity of their Irish Gold. They have a strategic plan which employs a dual approach. The first part started with bringing the fully permitted Omagh mining operation into production. Moreover, they use a concentration process, called froth flotation – this has produced gold, silver and other metals. Furthermore, Galantas Gold will continue operations underground and is actively developing the mine.
⁣Sumbawa District and the other three-district and one-municipality governments in Sumbawa Island have faced serious ecological challenges due to the increasing deforestation and forest conversion. As a small island, accumulated impacts due to these conditions, escalated by climate change, have been more serious compared to large island. Including the threats to the Bajo People, who have been living for generations in Bungin Island (Coral Villages). Produced by CIFOR and Rekam Jejak Nusantara Foundation, the video captures the activities implemented by KANOPPI and the associated impacts. Through participatory action research, KANOPPI influences the policy processes and translates landscape-based strategies into practices through a complementary agroforestry approach. Particularly in fostering a strong community-based inclusive business model, as a driver of the regional economy. Moving forward, KANOPPI initiative in developing the Grand Strategy for an Integrated Timber and Non-Timber Management at the Landscape Level, needs to be adopted at the island level of Sumbawa, to ensure synergy among the four-district and one-municipality governments.

Multistakeholder initiatives: fostering landscape-based natural resources management in Sumbawa
Copyright ⓒCenter for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)
License: Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed)
Thumbnail Photo ffmpeg auto screenshot from video
Audio: Real or Ambient Sound

⁣Food Security and Forests: Turning Women into Nutrition Ambassadors to Fight Malnutrition in East Cameroon Malnutrition is prevalent in much of the Congo Basin.
